Becoming a legal adult means that parents are no longer in control of most aspects of their now adult-aged child. Because your child is an adult, you can no longer make their healthcare decisions, talk to their doctors nor access any of their financial records without permission. However, at that age, most children are either living at home full-time or in between semesters at college.
Therefore, upon turning 18, it is important for children to sign Powers of Attorney for Property and Healthcare. The Property Power of Attorney allows the parent, as agent, to access any financial accounts, pay taxes or talk to the IRS, etc. The Healthcare Power of Attorney allows the parent, as agent, to make any healthcare decisions or access medical records if the child cannot.
Signing these documents are preventive in nature and allows a parent to safeguard a child’s property and make important healthcare decisions, which may help your family when it is needed most.
