Protecting families, finances and furry friends!

Even though it doesn’t feel like it, Thanksgiving is almost here!  It’s estimated that more than 48.7 million Americans are expected to travel for Thanksgiving this year. With the hustle and bustle of travel, planning dinner and catching up with family and friends, it might not seem like an ideal time to work on your estate plan. However, it’s actually the perfect time.

Traveling should motivate thoughts about estate planning. Some questions to consider before traveling: 1) have you named guardians for your children; 2) did you create powers of attorney in case you get into an accident and cannot make decisions about your health or finances; 3) have you updated all your beneficiary designations; 4) are your last wishes laid out for your family; and 5) can someone step in and locate your documents (including those received electronically)?

The topics of death and disability aren’t exactly the best topics to discuss while the turkey is being served.  But being around family is an ideal opportunity to bring up the topic. Pick a time that is convenient when the family is together to spend some time talking about this topic. It’s rare that most family members are all in the same place at the same time. Take advantage!
