The controversial speed camera fines have been lowered. The fine for driving six to 10 mph over the speed limit was reduced to $35 from $50. However, the fine for driving 11 mph or over the speed limit will remain at $100.

This was the second concession Mayor Rahm Emanuel made to try and win favor for his initiative. Mayor Emanuel has already made changes to his initiative trying to garner support. He has cut back the hours the cameras could operate by law near schools and parks.

The council committee vote was pushed by the Traffic Safety Coalition, a group that is run by a political ally of Emanuel.

Additionally, the city has said cameras would not be placed in more than 360 locations. However, it could be as low as 300 since some of the zones overlap, although more than one camera could be placed in a single zone.

The speed camera plan goes to the full city council next Wednesday for a vote.
