In the city of Alton, a police officer has been placed on restricted desk duty while an investigation is being conducted of the officer who has been accused of drunk driving and fleeing the scene of an accident.
It is believed that the officer rear-ended a car and then sideswiped another car on Sunday night, but did not stop at either accident. His abandoned car was found by police just north of the city limits.
The officer faces misdemeanor charges of driving under the influence of alcohol, failure to reduce speed to avoid an accident and two counts of leaving the scene of an accident.
