Under HB5602, signed into law by Governor Quinn, school officials and law enforcement are now allowed to share juvenile criminal records on a limited basis. The impetus behind the legislation was an attack on an Elgin teacher back in 2008.
Law enforcement records cannot become a part of a student’s records or public records. The information can be shared orally. Additionally, the information can only be shared by the agency or officer believes there is an imminent threat of physical harm to students, personnel or others “present in the school or on school grounds.”
The law will go into effect next year.
